Designed by watch designer Gérald Genta of Royal Oak and Nautilus fame, Universal Genève’s Polerouter was launched in 1954 in order to promote Scandinavian Airlines Royal Viking polar flights that connected Los Angeles, New York and Europe via a new route across the north pole.

The present watch was made in 1956 and features an attractive glossy black gilt dial with non-date layout and cross-hairs.  Radium lume pips have darkened with age.  Time is indicated via the original silver dauphine hour and minute hands, and a central sweeping seconds hands.  Applied “U” logo at 12 o’clock.  Signed “UNIVERSAL”, “GENEVE”, “POLEROUTER”, “AUTOMATIC”.  Stainless steel screw-back case measuring 35.5mm excluding the signed crown.

The UG cal 138SS bumper automatic was introduced in 1948 and was used in early Polerouter models before being replaced by the microrotor automatic.  The present cal 138SS is in excellent functional condition and is winding, running well and keeping time.
