1970’s GIRARD-PERREGAUX QUARTZ – 40MM, STEEL, NEW OLD STOCK
This is a big, bold Girard-Perregaux from the early days of the quartz era, and it’s in New Old Stock condition. The case is stainless steel and measures massive 40mm without the crown. The sculpted cushion shape has wide brushed faces, and high polished flanks. The case really shows off the angular, architectural style of 1970s Swiss design. Girard-Perregaux was a quartz pioneer. In 1971 it set the 32,768 Hz frequency that is still the industry standard, and this watch comes from this iconic generation of early quartz timepieces. This watch in particular features an in-house Girard-Perregaux caliber 352.
The dial is the factory original silver with a fine vertical linen brushing. It has applied baton markers with black inlay, and the 12 and 6 markers are doubled. The dial is signed with an applied “GP” logo, “Girard-Perregaux” and “Quartz,” and there’s a silver framed date window at 3 o’clock. The black-inlaid baton hands match the markers, and a slim seconds hand finishes it off. Everything is crisp and unmarked, as you’d expect from a watch that was never sold.
The caseback is stamped “Stainless Steel” and numbered “Z 9474 HA.” The crown is signed with the GP logo.
This watch still has the original dealer’s price tag, “ANS-GPQZ 479.95,” on the strap. That’s a rare bit of provenance showing it was never sold or worn. It also comes on its original navy blue Girard-Perregaux leather strap with embossed GP logo, and its original signed Girard-Perregaux steel buckle, marked “Acier Inox Swiss” inside.
